THE FIELDS ARE READY                                       JN 4:35-42

1 PREMISE: (35a) “There are four months until harvest...”

The time is probably about four months before Passover. Barley harvest concided with the time of Passover and the first cuttings were used in the festival of Firstfruits. Harvest was a key time in the life of the community and without it people would die. Knowing the harvest was already on the minds of people, Jesus used it as an object lesson. Harvest meant payday, and everybody likes a payday.

2 PERCEPTION: (35b)  “Lift up your eyes and look on the fields...”

Lift: Raise your eyes to see

Look: Concentrate, contemplate, consider

How can we see the needs if we don’t lift our eyes and study the situation.

3 PURPOSE:  (35c) “They are already white unto harvest...”

Visualize what the fields will look like, but more importantly what the spiritual fields look like now. When the fields are white, they were ready for harvesting.

The field of the world is already ripe for picking.

Open my eyes that I may see ....

No reaping without sowing. No sowing without reaping.

4 PRINCIPLE:

Reap what is sown:

Spiritually: He that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting

Gal 6:8

Sinfully: They that plow iniquity and sow wickedness reap the same.  Job 4:8

Reap later than is sown:

Spiritually: And let us not be weary in well-doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.  Gal 6:9

Sinfully: For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption.. Gal 6:8

Reap more than is sown:

Spiritually: He that sows sparingly shall also rap sparingly, and he which sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. 2 Cor 9:6

Sinfully: For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind...Hos 8:7
